1990 Vintage

The 1990 vintage was overall brilliant, even legendary in places.

Almost every region produced wines of fantastic quality from the Old World to the New, with very few regions suffering.

Top-performing regions still likely to be drinking very well now include Bordeaux, particularly the wines of the Right Bank, although the Left Bank wines were still superb. The sweet wines of Sauternes will easily still be holding their own and are likely to keep on going for some time.

There will also be a wide range of wines from Burgundy and Rhône that will have developed complexity, particularly from the top estates.

Barolo was superb and will be making some spectacular drinking from now to the next few years.

In the New World, both California and Australia produced some fantastic wines. There shouldn’t be a shortage of New World 1990 Cabernet that is drinking well now. Both Armagnac and whisky are available from this year, and are likely to also be drinking well.

Overall, this is a great vintage with many options well worth investigating for drinking now.
